How is reading time calculated?+

It assumes an average adult reading speed of about 200 words per minute and speaking speed of about 130 words per minute.

Does it count characters with or without spaces?+

Both. Separate totals are shown for characters including spaces and excluding spaces, plus the UTF-8 byte size.

Is my text saved anywhere?+

Only in your own browser’s local storage so it is still there when you return. It is never sent to a server.

Can I use it for essay word limits?+

Yes. The live word count makes it easy to hit a target length for essays, assignments and applications.
